What is a dermal filler?
A dermal filler is a hyaluronic acid or calcium-based product that
restores fullness and smoothes contours on the face.
Perlane®,
Restylane®
and
Juvederm® are hyaluronic acids.
Radiesse® is a tiny
calcium based microsphere that forms a "scaffold" to support and
stimulate the growth of your own collagen.
Does it correct all of my
wrinkles?
You will have an 80 to 100% improvement in the appearance of the
injected lines and wrinkles temporarily.
How long does it last?
It depends on the product, and the patient. Both
Radiesse® and
Juvederm® studies have shown them to last about a year.
Does it go away completely?
Yes, if you stop getting the injections the material is degraded by
the body, leaving no traces of the dermal filler in the body.
Is there any pre-treatment
required?
Avoiding any products containing aspirin, Ibuprofen, St. John's Wort,
Gingko or high doses of Vitamin E for 1 week prior to treatment may
help decrease bruising and bleeding at the injection site. Dr.
Bowhay will be able to advise you about this prior to injection.
Is there any post treatment
necessary?
Unless instructed to do otherwise you will need to leave the
area alone for 6 hours after treatment and refrain from vigorous
aerobic exercise for 24 hours. There might be mild redness,
swelling and bruising at the injection sites.
Does it hurt?
There is minimal discomfort, but a topical or local anesthetic
is available if needed.
If I am getting laser
treatments should I wait and get filler afterwards?
It is probably a good idea but not essential.
